I have a surface model file of upper column of steering system (which is manufactured by plastics) which is in igs format i.e dead solid . I want to convert the model into solid part so that I can make it into a parametric part. I have tried using thicken surface command and also by removing it from extruded block using Boolean operation. Both cases didn't produce satisfactory results. Please suggest some way to solve this problem as I have deadline to meet Thanks in advance!

If you want a "live" solid (parametric) you have to recreate it starting from your igs file.

Probably you will need to extract points, lines, everything you need to create other parametric features (eventually you can isolate extracted elements in order to delete later your initial surfaces).

Other option is to use Feature Recognition (can't remember what license you need) but not in all cases will give good results.
