Hi there
Hope everybody is fine
I hope I am posting in the right forum, since this is a cross topic question
Please I’d need an help from you
Following is the topic
I need to select an heat exchanger in order to cool down temperature of distilled water utilized to cool an electrical generator.
Following is the question: can I choose a normal provider that will provide me a copper tube heat exchanger ?
It seems to remember somehow that with distilled water copper can’t be utilized.
Please, can anybody help me concerning this topic ?
Is there any literature reference I can refer to ?
Thanks !

Hi Paul,
What is the rating of generator?
Is the water circulating through the conductors or is it circulating through the air-to-water heat exchanger mounted on top of the generator?
If the water is circulating through the generator stator conductors, then it is Demineralised (DM) water and cannot be just distilled water. Just check.
If it is DM water, there are stringent conductivity requirements and you cannot use copper tubes.
The generator Operating manual should give you more details on the subject.

That is an interesting question, Our printing press uses what is called RO water which has the minerals removed and because of this, the whole system needs to be stainless steel. Otherwise the water wants to replace the missing minerals and erodes standard piping metal as a result. Will watch thread to see what others suggest.

following the first two replies....
Is this for Stator Winding Cooling (Holy water!)?

I left the field a decade or so past and the "Chemistry" of SWCW was going through a LARGE discovery phase. Conditions like oxygen rich/deprived and the formations of oxides of copper.

While the piping from the Generator to the pumping skid is stainless (I don't recall what alloy) but even that was significant. However the cooler tube specs were an ASME copper alloy.

with that being said, I would want to get an answer from a current Generator Specilist or an active OEM
