Hi All

Please advise for my below situation.

I need to copy a drawing including views, dimesions ,notes, etc from one part to another similar part. I understand all the dimenions & notes will lost association when are copied to the new part. But I just want to keep all the dimensions (retained dimensions) and notes and re-assocatite them to new part. It will save lot of time for me by doing so. The names of part1_dwg and part2_dwg are created automatically with some fixed attributes in Teamcenter by using our company customised software so they cannot be created by using Saveas.

Is it possible to do so using export part (dimensions will be missing) or can be done by using a nxopen program?
Thank you in advance.

Hi Ken,
Thank you for your reply.
Yes,we can copy views and paste views from one part to another without any issues. However, when we are trying to copy dimensions and paste dimensions, all dimensions are squeezed into a same place in new drawing. I am not sure there is any setting related to this. I just want to keep retained dimsesions same position as that of original drawing when pasted into the new drawing.
For me, it is much easier to re-associate dimesions without thinking too much rather than create new dimensions one by one.

Any ideas? or any NXopen functions can do this?
Thank you in advance.

have you looked into copying the named references in teamcenter? There is a way in teamcenter to copy the named references from one data set to another.

I will have to see if I can find the document we had on this. It was more of an I-Deas to NX issue, but it would work in your situation maybe.

Thanks

Shane

Haha I found it. See if this will help at all. You may be able to reference this document and get something out of it that may work.

Use File export part. It can export a drawing to another part.

Hi -

Maybee I haved missed your point in this topic.

If not - then simply make a clone of your ugmaster, and the ugpart will follow included all views...
Then make the desired changes in the new ugmaster, and everything will be working fine and smooth in the new ugpart (drawing...

"lklo" got me thinking. I am only taking a wild guess here, but I am thinking you must have different parts that are quite similar to each other. So you are trying to export or copy the drafting information over from one to the other and just re-associate the dims so they will adjust to the new body?

If that is what you are doing, and you dont need the features for the solids, you might consider exporting the solid body of the new part. Then make a copy of the old one and name it as the new part. Then import that solid body into the new file and delete the old body. Then you would have all the dimensions there with lost associativity due to deleting the body, and be able to re-associate them to the new body.

If nobody can help you with your original request, maybe try giving a detailed explanation of what you are doing and they may have another way to do it?

Hi All,
Thank you all for your input. It is diffult for me to explain the situation clearly. So I reupload the picture and add some extra information.
Part1_dwg and part2_dwg are automatically created with some different part attributes in Teamcenter by using our company customised software. so, it is impratical to saveas or clone part1_dwg into part2_dwg. However, the views layout , dimensions and notes, etc. of part1_dwg are very similar to that of part2_dwg. So, I just need copy views, dimensions and notes, etc. from part1_dwg to part2_dwg and re-associate them. When I use export part it only export views but not dimensions. Any methods or setting to do so?
Thank you all in advance.

Sorry, I forgot you mentioned Team Center and the company customized software. Which is kind of a bummer because this is sort of the job that would be perfect to make a family part. One master part that is already dimensioned and you use expressions or sketch to move the hole and change the size of the part. Then run the family part to create all the individual parts according to the spreadsheet info. Especially if you have many different parts that are similar.

Sorry I cant help more. I hope someone else can come up with something for you.

1.make a clone of copy_part1.
2.make the feature edits/changes in new copy_part2.
3.now the copy_part2_dwg will update all dimensions...

Hi All,
Thank you all for your replies.
The problem is that the names of part1_dwg and part1_dwg are automatically created in Teamcenter with different attributes (not in same part family). Otherwise, it is easy to achieve by using save as or cloning then replacing component. What I want is just to copy views together with dimensions, tolerance, notes, other symbols, etc. from part1_dwg to part2_dwg and re-associate them. The pictures is just to show the concept. The real drawing is much complicated. That is why I need to copy them to save time.
BTW, the expressions, part attributes in part1 are totally different from part2 even though their shapes are quite similar.
I also tried name reference suggested by Sdeters but it seems not working.
My question is quite similar to below question because the dimensions are not copied while views are copied.

Thank you all and have a nice day!
