hi everyone,
i’ll appreciate any inputs on the matters below:
- what is the best (most realistic) way to label closed or u-shape core area walls?
The same label for all the walls of the core w/ checking of reinforcement of the section prepared in the section designer?
or independent names for each wall w/ automatic design?
- how does etabs take care about effective flange width t- and l-shape walls?
(½ of the distance to adjacent shear wall web or 25% of total height per aci)
or is it necessary to take care manually during modeling process?
Thanks in advance for your inputs.

The most optimal design is to assign a single label for the entire core wall. Effective flange width is an approximate method and shall be used when no better tool is available. ETABS has an advanced design module which would look at the 3D section. In some cases the reduction in reinforcement could be significant by using the core wall design feature of ETABS.
