Hey Everybody,

Does anyone have any design guidelines that includes fire-resistance performance? I'm currently using a 2002 Onesteel (Australian steel manufacturer) paper, but it's not very useful for any columns taller then 2m.

Thanks,
Paul

I have always run with the assumption that grout filling a steel tube increases the fire resistance period (FRP) but have never found concrete evidence of what FRP it is increased by.

CIDET (Europe) has done a lot of research into this. In addition, the old Stelco has a publication on this, if you can dig up a copy.

I would also suggest you contact the australian institute of steel constr. to see if they can point you to some australian guidance.

Actually, now that I think about it I am sure that ieaust structural engineering transactions had a few articles on this in the last year.

Hi

The National Building Code of Canada and the Canadian Design of Steel Construction Standard (Limit states design of Steel Structures CAN/CSA S16-01) both have instructions and formulas for that topic.

Good luck.

Could you be a little more specific, StrucConsultant? What article? I looked for it but couldn't find it.

Thanks all for the links and info. Given me quite a bit to get through.

Hey again, has anyone reviewed "Design guide for structural hollow section columns exposed to fire" by L. Twilt, R. Hass et al?

I'll have to find it, I don't have that with me here. We've done some buildings a few years back with those columns. I'll let you know.

Here we go :

National Building Code - Canada 2005
Volume 2
Division B
Appendix D
D-2.6.6

AND

CAN/CSA S16-01 - Limit States Design of Steel Structures
18.2

I hope this will help.
