Folks I am working on some Biligual Nameplates that contain Mandarian(Chinese) Characters. I would like to use the NX5 3D Text Tool - but I am stumped to know which font set is to be used with Mandarian. Tried SimSun, but intend of ????????, I got bunch of boxes.

Help!

John,

From what I can see, we have Chinese Character Support - because within the Drafting package, I have support with chinesef & chineset fonts.

Also, while waiting for a reply, I found a 3D Font set with Chinese support - but with a nasty little twist.

What you have discovered is a special font used when people need to reproduce the traditional format for writing Chinese (as well as Japanese) characters which is from top to bottom. Just rotate that image 90 degrees clockwise and it would be perfectly valid, if you were Chinese or Japanese ;-)

So, for the records - there are 2D font sets for Chinese that read left to right, but no 3D font sets in NX5?

Why do you keep talking about 2D versus 3D fonts? By definition ALL FONTS ARE 2D, period!

If you're referring to Drafting versus Modeling, then I suggest that use the terms Drafting Annotation (which uses NX Fonts) and Geometric Text (which uses TrueType fonts).

As for which fonts are loaded on your system, that's not our responsibility since we do NOT supply any TrueType fonts with NX, only the NX Fonts which are ONLY used by Drafting Annotation. If you need additional TrueType fonts to get the coverage which you need, that's your responsibility, not ours.

Sorry if my terminology is confusing - merely working on a means to an end. As for the what is and is not available on-site, if there is a website where ALL font sets that are provided by the UGS/Siemens team (maybe with a JPEG or TIFF of what the font set looks like) a la Adobe, then a majority of questions could be answered.

Regardless, I do thank you for having the time and the patience in this matter.

Let me repeat; "UGS/Siemens" is NOT in the font business, with the exception of the NX Fonts (used for Drafting Annotation only) that we provide and SUPPORT which are already delivered with NX and are installed automatically.

As for TrueType fonts which you may wish to use, these are your responsibility to find, purchase and install on your system. All that NX does, when you are using the Geometric Text function, is look in the Windows font folder (which in a normal install is located at C:\WINDOWS\Fonts) and whatever TrueType font files (with either a .TTF or .TTC file extension) it finds there will be available for creating Geometric Text features.

We have NO plans for providing any TrueType font libraries ourselves, now or in the foreseeable future, since there is nothing which we as an organization can add as value to the design and creation of font artwork since there are more than enough 3rd party foundries out there who would be more than willing to provide you with either standard or customized font libraries.
