Correlation of Permeability and grain size

Wonder if someone can help me out with the correlation of permeability and grain size of certain type of soils? I have lab results for sieve analysis and i have use Beyer's equation

K = C * D10²
C = 4.5e-3 * Log (500/U)
U = D60/D10
D10 = effective diameter in mm

We are assessing soils around Papua New Guinea area and water temperature may be an issue as well. but I believe there are other equation derived to suit different type of soils? wonder if there's any recommended reference or any opinion regarding calculation of permeability with grain size information..any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks!

I use Kozeny Carman (spelling?) for sandy soils
 
Here is a link to a graph that shows D10 or D20 grain-size diameter and correlation to hydraulic conductivity (permeability). Please notice that the permeability scale is in units of x10-4 cm/sec. So a graph result of 1.0 is actually 1.0x10-4 cm/sec and a graph result of 100 is actually 100x10-4 cm/sec (1.0x10-2 cm/sec).

I suggest that you get out eh 1995 Terzaghi Peck and Mesri (the bible) and review the sections on permeability. In the text, check out Kenney. It is well written and understandable.

Ma'af - accidently pressed hard enough to send on the first one - but didn't think so . . .
 
There's more than one test that will tell you something about permeability other than just particle size. Just out of curiousity, though, what kind of profile are you seeing over there? What's your SE? I might meander over to the soils testing forum and ask them something about that.

I have found a few other corelations as a comparison tho. fattdad : thanks for the graph!i can now compare my results with the curves...dirtsqueezer: we have quaternary alluvium clays and sands...we have only lab results from sieve analysis..which is why i'm after the correlation of permeability and particle size...
 
I was going to say, because if you had an SE value you could tell how much clay v. silt you had, which would give you a better idea, anyway. Types of clay vary greatly, of course... Oh well, best of luck!
