Hi All, I work in the pump rental industry, and I am designing a new pump that will be used for pumping ground water out of a construction site. This particular pump will be used in coastal areas (i.e. Florida) where the gound water could be brackish. The pumps we are using now have carbon steel components, and we are obviously having corrosion problems with these parts. What types of materials would be best to use that would be both cost effective and be resistant to cloride corrosion cracking and other seawater based corrosion? Water temperature would be ambient, 50-70F.

Thanks,

GTOJim

In the Eng-Tips search above use the terms +pumps +seawater +materials - there are over 300 hits discussing seawater pumping

There is a small booklet available from NIDI that talks about pumps for brackish ans saline waters. Great stuff.

i think that in your conditions, brackish water at ambient temperature, a Stainless Steel can do the job, but there are many factors to be considered for the final selection; type of pump, range of chlorides concentrations...

GRP pumps may be less money and impervious to the brackish water

In my humble opinion the best materials for pump manufacture, for centrifugal pumps, pumping sea water are as follows:-
Pump casings..................Ni-Al bronze
Impeller, shaft, shaft sleeves (if fitted), and wear rings are preferably one of the super alloys like monel.

Having worked with pumps manufactureed with these materials, I woulg highly recommend them. Almost trouble free for many years, providing the pumps are started up and shut down correctly. Even then the major maintenance is replacing wear rings if correct running procedures are not adhered to.
