Folks

I am looking for a source of cost estimating indices for construction work in the UK.

These are typically published by the BCIS on behalf of the government in the UK. They are available on a business to business basis and the subscription is expensive.

I am looking for the indices for some private construction I am doing and was wondering if there were any other sources for indices which I could use to adjust old prices.

Thanks.

When you find the answer, let us know!

The problem is knowing the future from the past.

I did a project a few years ago where we had the advice of a major UK consultancy. They had earlier performed a study for a large UK utility concerning indeing of costs. Their concusion was that past change was no predicion of the future. If you looked at any index at any point in time, there was no way to develop an algorithm to use the past to predict the future.

Also, when I worked for a large UK engineering company (Arnold Weinstock, where are you when we need you?) I did a study on indexed costs versus real costs over a 10 year period. No correlation.

Hoxton, that may be true but unfortunately there will always be an element of crystal ball gazing. And the indices are all there is.

The company I currently work for would have no use for construction indices (subsea engineering) so I cannot get them to subscribe. The world best argument would fall on deaf ears.

I was looking for them for a side project and cannot get the BCIS ones.

My fear is that there is nothing other than the BCIS stuff and they hold onto those like they are money.
