Does anyone have a good rule of thumb for the cost of a VFD?

I've heard ~100$/hp ??

Should only take a 5min phone call to a supplier to get the pricing? A 100kW VSD here costs around $10,000, but is AU dollars.

It isn't a linear relationship, bigger HP is greater cost/HP. Vendors are the place to get info like this and the answers to your heat questions.

I don't really need any specific values, I just wanted to get a rough idea so in the future is someone tells me a VFD for a 10 hp motor will cost $10,000, I'll have an idea that something is fishy...

in the US, it all depends on the type of job:
For a typical air handler, VFD's are very cheap these days, an average of $1,500.00 to $4,000.00 for private type work (10 to 40 HP fans)
Government jobs: look at double of private sector. You can still dispute the numbers with the contractor but you will not win.
Institutional (hospitals, universities): 1.5 times the private sector cost.
Change order for a government project: Look at 4 times the private sector cost (yes, really, the change order rates are way above the bid rates).

to all that, add locality pay.

Not an exact science of course, just my rules of thumb.

I think it depends on the options required for a particular installation. Interfaces, types of bypasses etc.
