There is one area, of several, where material substitution as suggested above would be easily accomplished carrying with it the associated cost and material savings if and when the newer materials become readily available with the full acceptance of all jurisdictional authorities.
As stated before I do a little work for a fastener distributer and we have been ask to look into alternate materials in conjunction with several customers in an effort to alleviate some fastener cost mainly in studs/stud bolts for different piping systems where the only consideration is equivalent strength and an industrial atmospheric enviroment.
We have encountered two majors problems with most companies not having very knowledgeable people when it comes to materials and couple this with the lack of knowledge about fasteners it presents a big problem even in initiating a conversation when the first question on the table is "Can you give us something cheaper than an 1 1/8" x 11" 316 SS stud". It usually goes down hill from there when we have to tell them we cannot recommend a material for them, we are only able to list the availability of some viable options with a final decision on a change in material has to be theirs.
Another problem also stated in the above posts is that the availability of materials in bar stock or suitable forms and willingness of manufactures to make fasteners from same when they are pinned to wall making stock fasteners out 304 SS and 316 SS.
I think some producers are missing the boat when they don't supply bar or wire to make fasteners. This is the easiest way to get people thinking alternates
