Hello everyone:
I'm new to the forum. I'd love to provide my two cents while I can and I'm sure I'll find good information here for my own many questions :-> . right now I'm wondering whether anyone has any experience in doing a sedimentation basin cover? is there any textbook comparison on pros and cons of covering sedimentation basin? covering part of it? thanks in advance for sharing!

A temporary or permanent cover? Why do you want to cover it?

the cover is to protect it from freezing so it can be a temporary (removable) cover if possible.

Have you considered using a series of bubblers to keep the surface ice free?

I assume that you want to cover these tanks for odor control. If that is the case, consider covering only the effluent launders where the falling water may release odors. We have used aluminum covers for this purpose very successfully. A sealing flap of rubber covers the end opening to isolate the head space and inlet air vents with butterfly dampers controls the inlet air to maintain a sight negative pressure below the covers.

Thanks for your replies. I finally got to know the real issue, and sorry it's not icing or odor. the client wants to cover the basin because wind creates waves that disturb the bottom sludge layer thus increase the sedimentation basin effluent turbidity. An automatic sludge removal system might help get rid of the problem. but we are still gonna look into putting in a cover. Do you know any company that makes covers for sedimentation basins?

Try Conservateck, Hallsten Corp., Ultraflote Corp.

Thanks for all your answers. they are very helpful. I just found out that for my wind problem, I might be able to use a fabric cover or a ball cover (water filled so they don't blow away). they are both an order of magnitude cheaper than the aluminum cover.
