Crack Initiation Criterion for orthotropic materials

Hello,

I am trying to find out the 'Crack initiation Criterion' which is available as an history output in an ABAQUS contour integral simulation. But the prediction of this 'Crack initiation Criterion' using the three conditions of 1. MTS, 2. MERR and 3. K2 = 0 works only for Isotropic materials.

ABAQUS displays the warning message - 'Crack propagation data can not be calculated for a crack in nonisotropic material'.

Can you please suggest what to do if I have an orthotropic material. Are there any alternative laws for orthotropic composites and if so, is implementing these through subroutines the only way?

Thanks in advance.

Best Regards,

Vishakh Rajendran.

Indeed, crack propagation direction can be calculated only for homogeneous isotropic elastic materials. Details and references can be found in the Theory guide in Abaqus documentation (chapter Prediction of the direction of crack propagation). You could try using subroutines to get this result as custom output.

Thank you very much for the response. But, are you aware of any law which can be implemented through the subroutine for this scenario?
