Hi,

My subcontractor send a method statement for lifting and operating a clamshell using both main and auxiliary hooks of a crane simultaneously. Is it permitted by code or a standard practice?

Thank you in advance.

What does your load chart tell you? It should be posted in the cab of the crane. Also contact the crane manufacturer for guidance on safety.

Our crane had charts for each alone or both together. Should be part of the crane rating.
One of our cranes the ratings didn't change, on the other they did.

Matty ....

Wild idea here .... Have the subcontrator tell you the make and model of the Crane and post it here...

Also, have him send to you a picture of the Crane warning sign (posted in the cab) and also post that here.

As stated above, there is no simple rule to follow here ,,,

You have to be careful with clamshell as their load charts for Manitowoc are rated for a lesser tipping load (circa76%) than lifting load charts rated at 80% of tipping loads. It all depends on the crane manufacturer so caution is warranted. Best source of information is to get hold of the manufacturer or their dealers.

The following is offered "as is": I discussed this with two different crane OEMs [from memory: Kobelco, and Manitowoc] during 2015, and my interpretation of the discussion was that both stated that both hoists may be used "concurrently" subject to both hoists being according to the respective load charts.
