Hey All

Probably a coffee-time challenge for most of you here...

We often have to use cranked or funnel type dimension leaders here and have two methods for NX4 - neither of which I feel is wholly satisfactory.

I've come up with a new method but to make it real sweet I need to ensure a detail view (Detail B in attachment)gets dragged along with its parent view (Section A-A in attachment) when its moved.

I've tried the options in Edit>View>Align View (eg Point to Point) but no joy so far....beginning to think I'm missing something easy here - any takers?...

Sorry, there is not provision for linking multiple views so that moving one will cause the others to move with it (i.e. no associativity). If you wish to move more than one view in one operation, you have to select all of the view manually and then perform the move operation.

However, getting back to your need for so-called 'cranked' dimensions, have you ever considered just changing the angle of the witness lines, as shown in the attached image?

Thanks for your input John,

Re: linking multiple views - shame :-( (It's nice bit of functionality available in V5)

As far as the 'cranked' dimensions - For sure, I offered the simple, quick solution you describe but that style is flatly rejected by the checkers here!

For what its worth - anyone who needs to do this wholly within a drawing (ie if they do not have write access to the drawing's child .prt), please see attached as a possible solution....

Comments on how this method could be improved are welcome :)

Cheers, Gruss

I would like to see the drafting standard which supports what you've shown versus what I suggested (and which is provided for in the software for just such cases as this).

John,

Your opening line could be read two ways where the words "like to see" could be read to mean you'd welcome the creation of such drafting standard, or to simply challenge somebody to find an existing one. I suspect you meant the latter, but I'd add that I wouldn't like to see the former. It seems to me to be a horribly complex and unnecessary addition to the software to want to make given that you can just crank the dimensions over sideways, create an extra view or a detail view to de-clutter your dimensions.

It isn't that I want to see software limited by standards written for manual drafting it is only to say that just because you can conceive of a different method doesn't always mean that it is a better idea. That may just be my view and I don't expect it to be regarded as any more than that, but if I had to choose between knowing my maintenance went towards developing three sided blends or drafting improvements then I'm going to opt for the modelling enhancement every time.

Hudson,

You're right, I was asking for someone to produce a Drafting Standard where this particular dimension format was supported in.

Hi Adeo,

My company also for 'for drawing view clarity' usse cranked dimensions when one or both of the extension lines has a log in it.

I have submitted ER's for this in the past, but am still waiting.

John B, if you have ever seen the 'jog' (I think it was called) command in ProE, that’s it.

Its not to support a specific drafting standard, its a clarity issue, particularly if a drawing is also going to me microfilmed.

It would be a useful addition to ‘in my opinion’ a good drafting toolset.

Cheers,

NXj

Adeo,

Have you checked out the 'ordinate' dimension feature?
This has a 'dogleg' function which is basically what you are trying to achieve.
It might not give you entirely the same result but it is robust!

For what its worth I'd quite like to see this feature too!

Jon

We have created "Dogleg" as user defined symbol, and then attach it to the extension line, that works fine.

@Man2007 & JonSelby - many thanks for the tips.

Haven't done much of creating user defined symbols, but I'll try it out - seems like a more efficient method tho...

@NXj/JohnR - thanks for your comments - it is indeed a CLARITY issue, and is something that is indeed also supported in other CAD packages (past AND present) for just that very reason.

Cheers/Gruss
