Creating a spline from points

I have imported a large number of data points and would like to "connect the dots" with splines to form a wireframe of a part.
To make these points easier to work with, can I put some of these points in a layer, then hide that layer until I am ready to work with it?

I could not get the layer icon to turn on in model mode. I tried configurations and that did not go well in model mode. All though it looked more promising. Bradley

I have noticed that the layer mode only works in drawing mode.
