Creating Linked Part Files 1

I am fairly new to Catia we are on V5R13 running in XP.

I have an part file for an upright, I am using a formula to drive the instance number of holes in it. I need to create several lengths of this upright. We are using a suffixed part number to create discrete part files for each length. Is there any way that I can create the files linked to my "base part number" part file so all the formulas and dimensions are linked to a single part and the only variable on the rest of the part files is the length. I want to have only one part to update if I have to revise the part (I may have to open and use the update icon on the rest of the parts but it is better than making the same change on each). Not sure if paste special with link or power copy or catalog is the way to go I don't have much experience with any.

I would use the Paste Special as As Result With Link. Make your source part the longest possible, and then in each of the derivative parts you can simply chop them off.

Another alternative is to Paste as Result with Link the profile and parameters, and create a new solid in each part.

I would create a power copy with a basic part defined in a design table which can contains also different parameters.

thanks for the help I will experiment with these ideas, not real comfortable with power copy, help file didn't quite lead me through my questions.

The PowerCopy is a very powerful tool, however it does not maintain associativity with your source and the user can modify them after they are placed into your part. If that is OK, then by all means go for it. They are pretty simple to construct, but can be very difficult to perfect. There are some subtleties that can drive you nuts until you get used to them.

If you wish to maintain your associativity, then you will need to use the Paste as Result with Link method.
