Can someone help me with how to create actual (not cosmetic) threads on a shaft?

Thanks

Sure. If you search this forum for "threads", you'll find plenty of posts.

Essentially, you'll want to create a helix for a path. Sweep a positive form (such as a triangle or trapezoid, depending on your thread type) along the helix as a path. You'll need to read the help menu for details on making such a sweep.

Good luck.
