Creation of elements set 1

Greetings all,

Maybe a simple question, but I can't find an easy way to do this. I have a hemisphere with a diameter of 25mm, see attachment. My goal is to define two elemen sets to apply different material properties. One element sets that contains all inner elements (let's say all the elements up till a diameter of 20mm). The other set contains the remaining elements (the outer elements, D>20). Is there a convenient way to do this? Handpicking elements individually is difficult since the selection goes through all. Selection by angle is also not an option.

Also, this part is imported from an input file. Therefore, there is no geometry present. I can't recreate the part in abaqus due to the exact orientation.

If anyone has an idea I am glad to hear it.

There is a scripting command to get mesh entities with the method getByBoundingSphere(). I think that's exactly what you need. Look at the Scripting Reference Manual if you want to know more.
 
Can you do this using partitions? You can a partition separating the areas and then when it comes time to select the elements for your sets you can hide the cells or faces (depending on how you partitioned it).

Just a thought.

 
@DanStro: OP just has an orphan mesh - no geometry so can't partition.

I like Mustaine's suggestion.
 
Can you not make the geometry yourself and then mesh it with hex elements? They offer the advantage of being able to select relatively smoother layers of elements. The geometry seems benign.

Although the shape is very straightforward, I could not recreate it in abaqus due to the exact orientation and location of the part, which is critical.

I followed the suggestion of Mustaine and checked in the manual how scripting works. It was indeed exactly what I needed. The code was very simple to write due to the built-in function getByBoundingSphere(). I tried it and it worked.
