critical depth in bored piles

if some body has experience in bored piles share his information.
if we have variable soil layers (cohesive & non cohesive) how we calculate critical depth in each pile?

I have many experience of cast insitu pile design and construction..im facing same problem, based on indian practices you should use finite element analysis in such a crucial cases.
