Hi Guys,

I'm working on an estimate and have outdated numbers for materials, what are the current material cost ($/lb) for structural shapes A992 Grade 50 and 316L?

I work in Arizona, the last numbers I have for Grade 50 CS is ~$0.80/lb for Carbon Steel about a year ago and $2.68/lb for 304 SS probably 3 years ago, I know alot has changed since then.

TIA!

More information from UofAGrad would be helpful. I agree with cvg that if UofAGrad wants fabricated or erected steel prices, Schuff would be a great company to call. However, if just looking for prices for delivered standard shapes, I would call a steel supplier, not a fabricator or erector. Nucor Skyline is big, servicing the nation. I'm sure there are more local steel suppliers in Arizona.

Material cost is great......but for any decent MTO.....you need the total (including fabricated and installed) costs. In some cases, it's going to run you several times the numbers you are quoting. Calling a fabricator is a good idea. There are other estimating methods out there as well (like RSMeans) that can adjust costs per location, difficulty, etc.

I agree, but the old $0.80 price that UofAGrad mentioned for carbon steel doesn't seem high enough to be a fabricated price, does it? Therefore, I assumed that the request was just for unfabricated materials. UofAGrad may not be asking about fabricated steel prices. More information is needed, as usual.

The $0.80 price seems like it might be material cost only. In estimating projects I will typically take the material cost and multiply by 3 ( material, fabrication and erection). In general, the price is floating around $4,000 to $5,000 per ton for the industrial projects that I am involved with.

Thanks for the feedback guys.

AUCE yes I was referring to only material cost, we do some fabrication in-house at my company so for this project that's all we're interested in. For contractors to installing painted CS platforms, handrails, stairways, ladders etc...I will typically use a $/ton value like you mentioned. Typically $5k-7k/ton depending on access, cranes, job size and so on.

FYI I contacted a local supplier and they are currently charging $2.15/lb for 316L on structural shapes.
