What is the current welding standard, or what standards can i reasonably refer to. It seems that at work we don't have a given standard we adopt/abide by. We have a BS499 hanging around but someone reckons it is no longer used. What should i refer to ?

You're in the UK?
I guess you should look at eurocodes, EN 1090, the 5817, iso 3834, EN 1011, iso 6947, ...
depending on what you want to refer.

or does the UK does not follow european codes (EN) ? I have no idea about any BS...

Hi - If its railway realated welding look at EN 15085-3. That covers vehicles and infrastructure.

we it's general welding in manufacturing, we make coolers - radiators and air conditioning units often these require welding for cases and support brackets etc.
