i've done it for years....when you open the curve toolbar, you turn off the string mode....there must be a preference, or somewhere in "metric defaults" or some other text file, where you can set it to off, anyone know where ? Please ??

Sorry, no can do. However, I can't help but ask, if you're running NX 3 or later, WHY ARE YOU STILL USING BASIC CURVES? Why are you not using the new 'Lines and Arc' function? After all, it more modern, the curves can be created associatively (a user selected option) and it behaves the way you like, i.e., no 'string function'.

If I'm correct it may be that what you're trying to do is create a curves parallel at a distance. I have the same problem, and you don't get that function anywhere in the new curve creation tools.

You do want to dabble in the newer curve creation tools as they do many things better than the old. You do have the choice whether to create curves parametrically or not. You can always use offset curves rather than parallel at a distance.

I would like to see offset curves made easier to use such that you can select numbers of curves that don't necessarily form a tangential chain if you wish to relax that requirement, or accept the consequences.

i do use the new curves as well, but usually only when i'm creating something that seems a waste of time creating a sketch for..
i find there are some types of curve that you can't create like this, so i normally use the old type for quickness

I still love basic curves.
I see too many people using sketcher wrongly and our company only cares about speed.
So sue me.

I'm curious to know how you can use a sketch wrong.

Justin,

Trust me you can do anything wrong if you try hard enough. Anyone who has ever designed something meant to be idiot proof will soon discover how somehow they can always build a better idiot.

I think what was meant that is some people make things overly complicated having a propensity to model\paint themselves into a proverbial corner. It isn't so much sketches or their use that people occasionally balk at, but really it is anything that carries the burden of deeply nested associativity imposing the task on the next user of trying to figure out how to make a simple change without unleashing a domino effect to the extent that you might more easily rebuild the model than attempt to understand it.

However I also balk at anyone who says you can't use a perfectly good tool in the way that best makes you productive. Sketch away as you see fit by all means and please also try and keep it manageable for the next guy.

My point has been made in other threads so without wanting to harp, I was referring to creating curve sections rather than construction geometry. Some of us unfortunately still have to create 2D sections on occasion. A task albeit to be avoided and foisted off on unsuspecting newbies, it is nevertheless easier if curve creation tools work to your advantage.

Here's an example Justin.
I pull up a file and there a 12 rectangular cutouts with holes outside each end for mounting a light.
Instead of using the UDF we have or even instancing features it is one humongous sketch with each rectangle and light sketched out. No sense and cumbersome.
In other cases the sketch is not tangent to the face so the person gets ellipses when they subtract. again using regular feautures would have been easier for all.
