Cushioning hydraulic cylinders

I'm a hydraulic cylinder designer looking to produce new cylinders with hydraulic cushioning on extension and retraction. We have existing designs that were developed using trial and error methods and these designs are not working in our new applications.
I'm looking for any resources or equations or design principles that apply to hydraulic cushioning that I could use to develop these new products.
