Cutting Drawn Over Mandrel Steel Tubing

Hello All,

I am new here. I have read a number of helpful posts all of you have posted. Very informative! I really hope you can help me with my question here:

I want to purchase a drawn over mandrel welded steel tube with these dimensions:
3.25" OD
2.75 ID

My question is:
If I were to cut this tube in half down its length, how much spring-back should I expect?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

No way to predict this. I would not expect the residual stresses to be evenly distributed, so how much the cut tube bows will depend on where you happen to cut it.

If you stress relieve or anneal the tube before cutting the deformation would be much reduced.

Just a thought.

Could you forge/cast the final shape that you are looking for. The issue of spring back then disappears.

I need to get this material as soon as possible for my project since it is readily available. As a result, casting, unfortunately, is not an option.

I think I may be able to ask the supplier to stress relieve the material for me. Thanks!

Keep in mind that the tubing won't be straight when you get it back from stress relief and it may also have a scaled up surface instead of the nice smooth finish you started with.

Can you weld the "whole" pipe in place first and then cut it in half as desired.

Press brake or something? How many pieces?

How long of a piece do you need?
I would suggest the press brake route also.

Gents,
Press brake ideas are very good! However, it would be less expensive for my department to buy the tube and slice it lengthwise in half....... the suppliers I contact did not have any data as far as how much the tube would open due to residual hoop stresses. I think, from gut feel, that it will not be much where it would affect my intended application negatively.
