Hi everybody,

Firstly, a bit about what I’m trying to do.
I need to upgrade a simple pump mechanism to something more industrial and durable.

The mechanism is basically a servo, rack & pinion driven (2.5mL) syringe. The purpose of this mechanism is to periodically push a small amount of air through a system of air lines.
I want to keep this general concept, and was wondering if there are air cylinders that work like an air pump (same as bicycle pumps), where they draw in external air and push it forward.

I did try to search google for something like that, but with no luck as I found only pneumatic cylinders and I’m not sure if they meant to work as air pumps, and I prefer a product that is meant to works as a pump rather than repurposing something.

I’m pretty sure that there are components that will answer my need, as at my lab we have a couple of ventilators that work on the same principle, what I’m not so sure about, if those cylinders (in the ventilators) are designed specifically for those machines (in term of operation and not design).

Yeah it's a viable idea but as I mentioned I don't want to repurpose anything if I don’t have to, and for obvious reasons I prefer something that is a commercial product so I can replicate the mechanism without relying on other products for spare parts.

Air cylinders are often the parts that get used for the purpose you describe. All you need is to add check valves.

2.5ml is a very small amount - basically laboratory sized equipment.

Is this air at very low pressure? You state a volume, but not a pressure.

Also how often?

Could you use a controlled lightly pressurised supply and simply pulse a solenoid valve? you might need to do a bit of trial and error to fix a pulse duration but if you use a really small tube then 2.5ml should be easy to set up.

Remember - More details = better answers
Also: If you get a response it's polite to respond to it.

A small SS air cylinder would do this well, this isn't an uncommon use.

About an air tank fitted with a pressure regulator that would continuously provide the desirable air pressure.
