Hello,
I have a question regarding the extension of a data network. If we have a building with a data network and we wish to extend this network to a field junction box that will then allow approx 5 temporary buildings to connect to the data network. Would we need a small outdoor panel with a new switch to allow this to work or is there another way to do it?

Thank you

Thanks for the reply. It would just be to connect the remote buildings to the existing intranet. So if we had a switch in a main building and ran a fibre out to a JB then this could allow the remote building to connect to the intranet or would we need a field mounted panel inclusive of a switch etc to allow the remote building to connect?

Thanks

At my site all of the inter building data lines are by fiber.

I have a report form a nearby campus that was using long CAT 5 cables, Signal strength was OK as long as the published distance limits (about 100m) are observed. Lightning damage susceptibility to the connected equipment was observed on the longer runs.

Whenever running CAT 5 between buildings, and sometimes inside buildings depending on how well the building is bonded together installing the appropriate surge protection gets important. Using this search term will get a number of vendors and some technical material "CAT5 Data Line Lightning Surge Protectors"
