davit and quick opening closure

Hello everyone

With reference to our project specification “Filters shall be provide with davit and quick opening closure, if weight of the cover exceeds 25 kg or if the elements require frequent inspections”.

the contractor claimed that he understood " davit shall be provided for package filters in case of cover weight exceeds 25 kg for handling purpose. Quick opening closure shall be provided based on requirement of frequent inspections as per Package vendor recommendation."

what are your thoughts?

Is the "contractor" the fabricator? If so, my guess is the contractor does not know whether or not frequent inspection is required. If it is your specification, it should specify these things.

Sorry, but honestly, from your post I am not sure who is doing what.

Per the sentence, both are required if either condition applies.

Acceptable to who? Appears to me that contractor proposes davit only for cover weight greater than 25 kg. Quick opening closure provided only if frequent inspection is recommended. By the Package vendor, whoever that is. Can't tell if davit is included with QOC as well.

I mean if the contractor proposal is in line with common practice. We, as a client can accept this deviation

johnthebest, I'm afraid I am not acquainted with common practice for that type equipment.

Some designs when compared to other that use nut and bolt or swing bolt sealing mechanisms, quick opening opens in a single motion without the aid of davit.

Be sure to review UG-35 although for a Filter it may not apply. The Design Calculations will require the loadings for the Davit to be evaluated including the welds, often overlooked.
