Dear All,

Could you please help me, as I'm going to design metal to metal seal for tubing hanger for Wellhead and X-Mas Tree. The MTM seal should able to be implemented under temperature class U (maximum 250 degree Fahrenheit) and under external pressure 10,000 psi. So, the material chosen as per analysis result is 17-4-PH stainless steel with 105,000 psi yield strength. The thing is this metal seal will sit in the tubing hanger with 410 stainless steel material 80,000 psi yield strength. The question is what is the effect of 17-4-PH material relative to 410 stainless steel in term of its application and installation? Will 17-4-PH damage the tubing hanger 410 stainless steel as the hardness of 17-4-PH is higher than 410?

Thank you in advance.

Your choice of 17-4 PH stainless steel for the seal and 410 stainless steel for the tubing hanger is interesting given the operating conditions you've described.

Regarding your concerns:

The higher yield strength of 17-4 PH (105,000 psi) compared to 410 SS (80,000 psi) is indeed a consideration. While 17-4 PH is harder, it doesn't necessarily mean it will damage the 410 SS tubing hanger. The actual interaction depends on several factors, including the specific design of the seal, contact area, and applied loads.
To better assess the situation, could you provide more information on:
1. The specific seal design (e.g., C-ring, V-ring, or custom profile)?
2. The expected contact pressure between the seal and the tubing hanger?
3. Have you considered alternative materials or designs that might offer a better balance of properties for your application?
At Sonkit, we specialize in high-performance metal seals for extreme environments like subsea wellheads. We'd be happy to discuss your application further and explore potential solutions that could optimize the seal performance while ensuring the integrity of both the seal and the tubing hanger.

Please feel free to provide more details or reach out if you'd like to discuss this further.
