Dear All,

We produce A234, A420 and A403 material steel elbows. We have a lab in the factory and we perform the chemical and mechanical tests here. For the small sizes A420 material elbows (OD less than 3"), can you please help me about how we prepare tensile test specimen in accordance with ASTM A420? Due to small size limitation, I can not cut the specimens in the correct dimensions needed. Thank you in advance.

ASTM A370 can be used as an umbrella specification for virtually any steel product. Since your steel elbows used for piping are too small for the listed tests, you can use A370 as a substitute and just measure and test the base material. The tensile strength resulting from the basic A370 tensile test can be used to calculate the tensile strength of your end product. IF there are any welds in your product, you can test the weld strength directly on the finish product by pulling it apart and listing that value as the tensile strength of the weld.
