In 2002 Bahamaman started thread 50-32674 asking for tips on a debarking machine for small diameter branches. I want to know if he solved his problem. I also need a machine to debark posts of quinine trees with diameters from 5" to 2 1/2".

Would it be cheaper to use local labor to strip the logs and branches manually of your cinchona? Provide an economic upswing to them, so to speak? Spent a lot of time in the Philippines in southern Mindanao where only the largest ag operations are using mechanized methods. It's unbelievable what human labor can accomplish, and if you pay them slightly higher than the going rate and treat them with decency and respect, you'll have near 100% reliability.

Ornerynorsk: thanks for the suggestion. That is precisely what we have been doing for 60 years. Changes in the agro-economy result in scarcer manual labor. If my harvest starts late, they all leave to work on the sugarcane and coffee harvests which start earlier. Besides, socialist government policies make it inconvenient to have a large labor force on payroll. I need to explore mechanization to improve the bottom line.

Treefarmer,
Try a google search for "post peeler". I saw several commercially built unit and at least one set of plans.

Griffy, you are the best!! I had spent hours googling "log debarkers" and other such terms, with no good results. Already found a wealth of information and plans with your tip. Aleady requested prices from a used sawmill equipmment dealer. Thanks alot. Lucy.
