I know it is pretty common to form a boss in sheet metal that is then tapped. For instance in say 1mm thick steel to produce a boss that might be 3-4mm high that is then tapped M3.

I want to use this process to put an M20 female thread into a 10 or 12mm thick plate, achieving around 16mm of thread engagement.

Is it possible?

Cheers,

Ian.

Pierce, extrude, and express tap is possible in mild steel, certainly.
What material did you have in mind?
How big a press have you got?

Raw tonnage and tool strength are the only limiting factors.

It is better to have enough ideas for some of them to be wrong, than to be always right by having no ideas at all.

Thankyou for the positive responces, at least it can be done.

Material is just mild steel

I have found some theory in an astm or asme manual but the formulas fall over for such thick material

Would this be design by trial and error? Where do I start?

Thanks

Ian
