Hi All

I was wondering if there is a max depth for steel beams, in order to comply with AS4100 or NZS3404?

I found couple of slenderness ratios but didn't find any maximum depth limit, for welded beam in orders of 1.2-1.5m deep.

The standard welded beams in Australia are produced up to 1200 deep, but deeper sections can be sourced. The slenderness requirements must be met.

Thanks hokei66!

I'm aware of the 1200WB, but my question is, is there a limitation on the depth of beam in AS4100? can we design 1.5m deep or 1.8m deep beams in accordance with AS4100, or AS4100 can't be used after certain depths?

Thanks

I am not aware of any such prohibition, but I don't have at hand AS4100. If you are going to design these beams, you will need the standard, so why not just check it?

That deep a beam needs to explicitly be checked against web and flange deformation since the sides are so deep, each quarter-section (half of the flange for example) is so far from the other half of the flange stiffener that each could bend separately under load.

Zahid01:
A 6' deep welded/fabricated beam/plate girder is nothing exceptional. The codes and standards for the design and fabrication of these are well defined and developed. I’ve been involved in the design and fabrication of plate girders almost three times that deep at the haunch/pier bearing.

An offshoot to this discussion is that we did manufacture girders with depth of over 2 meters for bridges and the trend then (1990's)was to use heavier gauge steel for the webs instead of welding transverse stiffeners along the length of the girders.
