My understanding is that the definiton of shell course is, "sections of rolled shell plates butt welded togather to form complete shell". Is shell to head joint comes under the definition of "Shell Course"?
Requesting urgent response.

Thanks,

Meck91, a shell course is an individual R&W cylinder or length of pipe. One or more shell courses are joined together and/or to other components such as heads, cones, flanges, etc to form a shell. A weld seam is a weld seam.

Regards,

Mike

I consider a shell course to be a complete circle of plate, of whatever width is being used to form the shell. IE, if you take three plates, roll each into a full circle, then weld them together, you have three shell courses. If you roll each into a 120 degree arc and make one circle out of the three, that's one shell course.

JStephen,
Just for clarity. In your analogy you would have to weld the three complete circles end to end to get three shell courses. You could weld them together and achieve one shell course (layered shell). So it all depends how you weld them together. The devil is in the detail!!

The shell course welded to a head will be considered either as the first or last one depending on your starting point and the position of the vessel.
