Marble tiles will be 36x36 (1.25" thick on a 1.5" mud set)

Using L/600 for the total deflection criteria.

Never worked with tiles that big. Anyone have experience working with this large a tile?

Thanks.

Deflection criteria sounds ok.

Make sure Architect uses cleavage(slip)membrane between structure and tile.

We had a stone tile system that required very tight slab-on-grade deflection and curling criteria. We ended up using a unique mix with no control joints (and some reinforcement) to minimize curling and it apparently worked pretty well.

According to one of Boise Cascade's Technical Bulletins the Marble Institute of America recommends L/720 or <7/32". I haven't independently confirmed if this is true.

Thanks you for the tips. I am going with the L/720. My span is only 14' so I'm not too worried.

Will want to make sure flatness/levelness is specified as needed as well. Architects should be doing this but often gets shoved back on to structural engineer or, worse, ignored. Commentary to ACI 117 has some good guidelines as to how flat you need to be for various uses.
