Desalter Electrostatic grid

Dear members,

I found some references in a standard were it is recommended to coat the last 25-50 mm of the tips of the grid. One internal client asked if this is typical for electrostatic grids and asked what are the exact coating requirements for the grids. Unfortunately, I have no answer. Also I found very hard to find references regarding desalters electrostatic grid design details on the internet, because I believe this is a proprietary technology of a few companies.

I have good understanding of desalters vessels corrosion issues from my previous working experience, but the electrostatic grids were out of my scope of work. I just know the very basics: the grids are used to create an electric field to help coalesce and separate the water from oil/water emulsion and that several types of different grids and electrodes exist.

From my limited knowledge of these devices, I would say these components are usually not subjected to high corrosion, since they are in contact with oil/water emulsion and not free water, but I don't know if my feeling is correct. I guess I never gave much thought to it before. I would appreciate if you can let me know your experience regarding specific corrosion issues, usual material of construction and if coating is usually required or recommended for these internal components.
