We are a major Dome Shelters manufacturer, and we provide custom shelter for residential, commercial and industrial use.
The product;
All frames are made of heavy gauge structural steel tubes. Tube sizes range from 1 1/8 in. OD up to 2 3/4 in. oval tube depending upon usage and size structure. All steel incorporates galvalumeTM finish for extended life span and smoother surface (cover protection). All weld material is cold galvanized to eliminate rust damage. Engineered for extreme conditions including heavy snow & wind loads.
The Design;
We presently outsource all design to a firm that is using S-Frame and P-Frame for the structural design an analysis. FabTrol's 'Estimating' module of this software includes databases filled with UK, European, AISC and CISC sections, sizes and grades, including mild steel, high strength, stainless steel and aluminum. Also all non-steel related items can be built into the proposal i.e. crane hire, decking, sub-contract detailing and design etc.
Problem and question;
We are presently considering bringing our Engineering in house for practical reasons. Since we are located in Toronto, Canada we are also concern with finding the right Engineering staff with the right software skills to sustain our engineering needs.
One of our concerns is to decide whether we should remain with this application and train our new engineering staff on this “less known” application or whether we should engage selection process for a new software platform with similar capabilities but more popular within our engineering community. This brings me to my final question, what other popular software platform should we benchmark that would meet our engineering and cost estimating needs?
