Hello all,

Would like your help if you can point out to me guidelines or sample on the design calculation/steps need to be taken to do design check on existing RC beams with opening as the beams was previously not designed with to include the opening.

Thank you.

The paper linked in the thread hotrod provided will tell you that flexural capacity isn't affected as long as the longitudinal bars aren't interrupted, and as long as the penetration stays out of the compression block. Therefore its really just a shear check of the two failure modes discussed in the paper (assuming the penetrations are relatively small and near the center of the beam cross section).

It all depends on the geometry of the beam and the geometry of the opening. (And, of course, where the opening is along the beam length.)

Think about your load path through the beam and use a rational approach from there.
