Develop technical knowledge in Substation Automation

Hello Everyone,

I am at a point in my career where I want to develop my technical knowledge for substation automation and probably head toward that. I know that nothing beats practical experience, but I was wondering if there are literature, references, handbooks, websites,..... you can recommend to start and build a solid foundation in substation automation

Ummm...what are you looking to automate that hasn't already been automated?

Station bus low-tension voltage regulation and control by way of automatic tap changer operation: done.

Automated capacitor switching schemes: done.

Circuit breaker auto-reclosure for transient faults: done.

Remote control of reclosure blocking for "hold-off" / "hot line work order": done.

Remote blocking of feeder low-set relaying for switching purposes: done.

Remote setting of circuit breaker reclosure selections, such as "Station A breaker HL1 reclosure selected undervoltage plus time for circuit A1B while normal UV+T breaker DL1 at station B is out of service": done.

Note. though, that to the best of my knowledge these have all been developed by existing companies who zealously [jealously?] protect their products and the knowledge of how to implement them; imho seeking employment with one of the big relay manufacturers might be the way to go.

If I'm misreading you, please clarify what you hope to accomplish.

Hi crshears,

I don't want to reinvent automation I just want to learn the basics and develop my knowledge in this field (RTU, Relays, Protocols, Gateways, I/O....)
