Many times i face a problem wherein there is a minor deviation in chemical content of a element for particular grade mentioned in ASME SEC IIA. But , the mechanical properties are met. Considering the functionality of the component we the manufacturer feel that the deviation should be acceptable as we are meeting the code requirements for mechanical properties. But the client does not accept it as the code chemistry is violating. What advice the experts have for manufacturer in such scenario.

We are procuring SA 572 GR 50 type 2 material. There is minor deviation in vanadium content. Mechanical properties are meeting code requirements. considering functionality, this deviation could be acceptable. But client is not accepting due deviation in Vanadium.

If the material doesn't meet the specification, it isn't SA-572 Gr. 50 Type 2....simple as that. Did you check the allowable variance in the reference specs, such as SA-6?

100% agree - how are you certifying the material as SA-572 GR50 Type 2 on the mill cert if it doesn't meet the spec?!

If you are the mill, you downgrade or regrade the steel into another grade or spec. Did this many times while I worked in a steel mill.

client has accepted this deviation based on the facts that offered material meets the strength criteria.

But you still can't certify it to the spec.
Either you meet all of the requirements, or you don't.
ASTM/ASME allow no exception, period.

Totally agree with EdStainless. Is there a Code Case or interpretation to support this? How can the AI accept?

Dear 212197,
Please check the manufacturing process.
Many times it has been observed that people is testing the material as check test and then they claim, all the properties meets the codal requirement except one or so...
But please always check the manufacturing process as code/ standard understood that once the product is manufactured by considered process then only the products meet the test requirements.

So before doing check test, its manufacturing route shall be verified.
