Dewatering Bags/Silt Bags

Just wondered if anybody has used the dewatering bags that you can pump sediment laden water into and it filters it out and allows the clean water to pass through. I have not had to use them yet and wanted to know how effective they are, how much water can be passed through them before they need replaced, how easily the hose stays connected, and how easily they tear? I've found information on them but wanted to ask those who may have used them in the field and get a perspective from someone who isn't a sales rep.

I've used them underground. They need to be replaced when they are 60-80% full of sediment, no correlation with volume of water pumped thru them. Hose stays connected with zero problems. They dont tear until you try to move them and even then they are quite resilient.

I've only seen them used once and it was at a site where the soil had a lot of fines. It did a good job removing silt, but not very effective with the clay. The water passing through was not crystal clear ... it was turbid, but still better than what was pumped in. Bag was very heavy but stayed together when lifted with an excavator bucket.
