We currently are doing a Mod. on a broken cylinder block. This is a Small Deutz 1011 series diesel engine with an open top face sleeve fitted as a dry sleeve(like the honda engines). Our repair plan is to completely machine out this thick sleeve and then to make and fit a new sleeve. The size is abnormal and can't be bought as a standard sleeve. From previous experience, the bought sleeves from one make product to the next has great influence in the wear.
How can one go about in deciding what cast-iron type of material to buy for our machine process.

I would try lasleeve.com to find something close then modify for your needs. A lot less work and known materials. They have a sleeve part number listing by diamter.

Centrifugally cast iron used to be the material of choice.
Here in the UK, Laystall and GKN (Sheepbridge) were the market leaders at one time.

The centrifugal process give you an homogeneous micro-structure with uniform physical properties.

Some of these liners are finished by hard chrome plating and then slurry honing so that you end up with a finish that looks like orange peel - excellent oil consumption performance.
Laystall:
GKN shifted their liner business from Derbyshire to China - what a surprise:

Chromard liners ??

is n't it easier to buy a new cylinder/liner/piston assembly from a Deutz subsidary? given your experience with previous liner replacements, i think it would make sense to buy the original parts where the materials and the surface finish was closely matched to obtain low oil consumption.

it is a rather small engine and problably simply buying the parts would not much more extensive as trying to make a fitting liner yourself

strokersix is right,

Bore out the old sleeve and make sure the remaining block bore is smooth and cylindrical. Take very accurate measurements of the bore (and counterbore if there is one). Then call LA Sleeve and they will quickly machine and ship you a new custom centrifugally cast ductile iron liner, for an amazingly low price.

When you get the liner, LA Sleeve will have already ground the OD for the proper shrink fit into your block. Shrink fit it according to their instructions. You will then need to finish bore and hone the liner after installation to fit your piston (assuming your piston is still usable). You should replace the rings, and make sure the honed cylinder finish is correct for your ring type.

Good luck.

Lasleeve, I did find your mentioned website a few days back. But we are situated in South Africa, this is a bit to far(economically).

The centrifugal process I have heard now more than once. I am under the impression that the centrifugal process can only be manufactured in the form of a hollow bar, is this correct? This is about a argument referring to a mianight(spelling ?) material that is apparently centrifugal but in a solid state bar form. What is this centrifugal process? Does anyone know what mianight is used for?

Sleeves bought by us as a stand part purchase, I guess is all centrifugal process material. Yet one brand does not last as a next brand. So i guess that the material cast-iron type used in these different brands is also of importants.

This is a Mod, the sleeve can't be bought from Deutz. We have done it if we could.

Great web sites given to answer some of my questions, thanks!

I was then correct with the centri-casting process that can't be provided in a solid bar form. This means that the Meehanite material offered(solid bar state) is not the correct piece of metal to be used for this job.

I however have still not the final solution for the correct material(metal piece to be bought) for this job. Any suggestions?
