Diesel Engine Return System

I have a question concerning return systems.

Normally, return lines feed directly back to fuel tanks.

However, in a plan I'm currently looking at, the fuel system return lines are plumbed back to a common manifold and fed directly back into the fuel system.

The return lines off machinery are fitted with check valves.

Although not typical, is this arrangement good or bad?

Good.

Returnless fuel systems are generally a good thing, so long as you can keep the fuel near the engine cool enough. It may be worth investing in a variable rate pump to make sure that the fuel is not being recirculated unneccesarily. That depends on your application.

This type of system is now normal on diesel/HFO fired power stations. The return line feeds to a small vessel where it is mixed with new fuel coming from the service tank.
The circulation rate in the system is generally set at 3 to 4 times the fuel consumption rate.
A point to remember is where to position your fuel meter (if used). It must be installed just before the mixing vessel so that you dont measure return fuel!

What type of application are you looking at? I have some P&I diagrams if you are looking at power plant type system.
