Does anyone know if a Diesel Fuel Pump House module have to ventilated? The module is 10'x10' (roughly) and is unoccupied. The module is class 1 Div 1 and has halon.

The current HVAC design has two fire dampers (normally open) that close during a fire. One is up high and the other is down low (opposite ends). There is also an explosion proof electric unit heater.

The current dampers are broken and do not close for halon containment. I have been tasked with replacing these dampers with 2-position actuated.

My question is, do I need to ventilate this space? assuming natural ventilation is ok because it is unoccupied.

thanks

Do you mean mechanically ventilate? not necessarily.

It depends on the area of the ventilation relative to the space. If the two nat vent dampers are big enough, then you are fine. You need to replace them even if you mechanically ventilate the space, so may as well do it.

yes, like add an exhaust fan.

The space is pretty small and there are no adjoining modules.

This issue was brought to attention by a Fire & Gas Engineer. Damper replacement is a must.

I am going to replace both dampers with a Ruskin CD60 and use the belimo 2-position actuator in the explosion proof box. If a signal from F&G is sent the dampers will close.

I also want to hook a space thermostat into the dampers. So in the summer they are always open but in the winter (when its -50F) they are closed so the electric heater can keep the eye-wash station from freezing.

thanks for the help
