diference between consistent mass matrix and lumped mass matrix

hai all
what is the deffrence between consistent mass matrix and lumped mass matrix..in real case where we are using each one ..how this will effect on element stiffness.

the difference lies in the approach to obtain each. cosistent mass matrix is obtained using same shape function used for obtaining stiffness matrix while lumped mass matrix is obtained ususally by inspection. consistent mass matrix involved much effort and computer cost but gives more accurate results. please refer to eg 'dynamic of structures'. by r. w. clough for good account of the issue
