What is the main difference between angle of reposes and angle of internal friction of soil????

The angle of internal friction is is the Arctan when plotting normal (x) vs shear (y) stresses in a soil specimen at failure. It has a correlation with the N-SPT values and it is a measure of the shear strength of a soil. The more consolidated the same mass of soil the higher its angle of internal friction. It is a most important parameter in slope stability analysis, design of earth retaining structures, etc., In very loose sands, for instance dunes in the desert, this angle is similar to the angle of repose for this soil. Regards.

in which case angle of internal friction is different from angle of repose????

the angle of repose is influenced by soil tension, soil moisture and capillarity. Friction angle is not.

Right, since effective normal stresses (no pore water presion) are used to calculate phi.

Thank you for your insights fatdad. Regards.

I meant Water Pore Pressure; sorry I was thinking in my own language.
