What is the difference between 10B21 and 10B22 steel? Any help is gratefully received.

The manganese content is slightly lower in the 10B21 material 0.6/0.9% compared to 0.7/1.0%

If these materials are used in a rivnut application, will the formability (forming of the rivnut)be affected significantly by going with 10B22? Also - what are the typical properties of these alloys?

I don't believe you would see any significant difference in performance between the two alloys particularly since many heats of material actually meet the analysis specification of both alloys.

I agree with Carburize-- there will be very little difference in performance between 10B21 and 10B22. In the North American fastener industry, 10B21 has become the standard low carbon Boron-containing grade used for quenching & tempering. 1022 is usually produced without Boron. ASTM F 2282 (almost identical to IFI-140) has requirements for 10B21, 1022/A, and 1022/B, with the latter two differing slightly in C and Mn limits. The ductility limits (stated as minimum % reduction in area) are the same for these 3 grades across the various conditions (Annealed, Annealed in Process, Spheroidize Annealed, etc.). Keep in mind that Boron is only necessary if the parts are to be quenched & tempered.
