Difference between a weld map and a fabrication drawing

Hey! I am in doubt. I need to know the difference between a weld map and a fabrication drawing.

I have seen that vendors include welding symbols, welding procedure specifications (wps) and non destructive test examinations (ndt) to be performed in general arrangement drawings. Is it considered a weld map?

If you can give me a definition that will help. Thanks!

Typically, not. A weld map normally identifies a weld joint in a component, weld joint configuration (open root butt, etc) and person or persons identified as depositing the weld (root versus fill by process) and hold points for visual or NDT.
 
Maybe another way to think about this is that a weld map is evidence of welding having been completed to a fabrication drawing or specification, for traceability.
 
We use a fabrication drawing for dimensions needed to fabricate the item, ie, size, openings, NDE requirements yada yada.

We use a weld map to assign weld procedures to different weld joint, categories, etc. Then if the customer wants us to we can identify the welder's stencil, etc.

We try not to put on material information, or NDE requirements as it can clutter the drawing up quite a bit.

Autocad makes it easy to create another drawing for another use.

My understanding of a "weld map" is a little different.

While a fabrication drawing should show all details of the individual welds, it does not assign them a unique number or letter.

A "weld map", according to my understanding, assigns a unique designation to each weld.

The primary purpose of the "weld map" is to serve as a convienience document for recording weld inspection.

Our weld maps are as stated by MJCronin. All our weld maps are all isometric drawings. They contain a reference numbers that connects with our inspection databases.
This format has been a great help in our monitoring of these lines us outside UT and RT people, simple and to the point.
 
In the past vessel fabricators showed all WPS numbers on the detail drawings.

The weld detail showed all the necessary dimensions and also referenced the fabricators unique WPS number.

The WPS was a unique document (or was within a document containing several WPS's) and showed all the necessary weld parameters, filler type, etc, etc amd also possibly had the applicable PQR attached - although this could also be in a seperate document.

These days a lot more fabricators tend to show less data on the drawings and refer to a weld map (as per MJCronins post).

The weld map also tends to include a outline GA of the vessel / exchanger which highlights which WPS is applicable to each weld - I would post an example but I'm at home at the moment.
