I have come upon a question I cannot figure out and was hoping someone here could help...
I have run across the words "trading" and "marketing" in the various energy industries and am not certain how these are being used. Does the word marketing take a different context than in other industries, ie is it sometimes used interchangeably with trading? I view trading as being the exchange of energy (buying and selling) and marketing being more of the sale to retail customers. This merging of the two terms seems especially prevalent in the electrical power industry. Is this confusion on my part, or something that the industries are undergoing currently?
Any assistance in explaining this would be greatly appreciated.
Best,
-Bill

Marketing is a generic term whereas the term trading would eventually lead to closing of a commodity transaction.
Nowadays, B2B trading is a multi-billion business and anything under the sun is available for trading (energy to weather). Go to Enron.com to view the website of one of the
biggest B2B trader in the world. Hope this will help.
