Refer to AISI S213-07/S1-09 (2012), Cold Formed Steel Framing Lateral Design for an explanation on design procedures.

When designing your lateral force resisting system, walls may utilize metal sheathing to support the application of lateral loads. In this case, your metal stud wall will receive metal sheathing, either on one or both sides, and be fastened to transfer shear loads through the wall. Depending on the steel gage, fastening, end of wall chords, etc... these walls are put into different classifications and will provide varying lateral resistance.

Diagonal strap bracing is a form of lateral resistance that uses tension straps within the wall to support lateral loads. Lateral forces are resolved into tensile forces in lieu of transferring loads through the metal sheathing.

Both types of systems may be used. However, design considerations must be given to each system depending on your application, seismic design category etc.. You cannot just substitute one for another without qualifying each system for your particular scenario.

thank you very much @streng007
